LAIKIPIA
Laikipia offers everything from vast, untouched wilderness, award-winning conservation, vibrant local culture and an abundance of wildlife. It’s home to the “Big Five” mammals – elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, and rhinos, as well as a wealth of endangered species such as the Grevy’s zebra and African wild dog. Situated in central Kenya, under the gaze of Africa’s second-highest mountain, the Laikipia plateau stretches to the edges of the Great Rift Valley and Kenya’s remote north. It’s a landscape of rolling plains, forested valleys, acacia woodlands and rocky outcrops, set against the beautiful backdrop of Mount Kenya. Experience a walking safari through thick bush, track animal footprints, or stop to identify medicinal plants and bird species.
SAMBURU, BUFFALO SPRINGS AND SHABA
Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba are three interconnected reserves on the edge of Kenya’s vast arid and semi-arid north. They hug the northern and southern boundaries of the Ewaso Nyiro River, which acts as a magnet for wildlife in search of water, vegetation and prey. The reserves are a haven for elephants and predators including lions, cheetahs and leopards. The contrast of palm groves, riverine forests, rugged hills, dry bushland and sacred mountain backdrops make these three reserves a must-visit for all intrepid explorers. They are home to the northern special five species (Grevy zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk and the beisa oryx), which though rare, can be frequently spotted in these reserves. The wider Samburu region is a conservation success story and there are fascinating opportunities to interact with the local Samburu community, researchers and organizations here that protect endangered species.
MERU
Located east of Mount Kenya, Meru National Park is classic safari country – wild, off-the-beaten track, unhabituated wildlife – a world away from the busier southern parks. Made famous by conservationist Joy Adamson and her story about Elsa the lioness in the book “Born Free”, the park boasts a wide range of diverse habitats. Thirteen rivers bisect the park, creating lush riparian ecosystems and swampland, mixed with woodland, open plains and a landscape dotted with kopjes. Meru is home to large herds of elephants, lesser and greater kudu, buffalo, leopards, crocodiles and has a fenced-off sanctuary for black and white rhinos, making this one of the best places in Kenya to see these endangered animals. One of Kenya’s quieter parks, game drives here can feel as if you have this pristine wilderness to yourself.
MATHEW’S RANGE AND OL LOLOKWE
In the heart of Samburu-land lies the Mathew’s Range, one of the most remote and untouched areas of the country. The mountains stretch 150 km, north to south, with very few visitors making the trip here. Just south of the Mathews sits Ol Lolokwe, a vast rock jutting out from the region’s arid landscape. This is the sacred mountain of the Samburu tribe and is a prominent and ever-present backdrop to a safari in this part of the country. Both are sky islands: isolated mountain forests that rise from the dry plains below. They offer wonderful hiking opportunities, unique wildlife experiences – elephants and buffalo are often spotted, as well as unbeatable views of this vast region. This is Kenya at its most wild and secluded.
MARSABIT
In the far north of Kenya lies Marsabit National Park, a rarely visited gem, which features a montane forest and several crater lakes formed within volcanic calderas. Lake Paradise is the most famous of these, a stunning body of water fringed by thick forest, where you can view myriad wildlife. Marsabit is a refuge for huge tusked bull elephants, the regal greater kudu, diverse birdlife and reptiles. Quiet and off the beaten track, Marsabit is a must for any safari heading deep into the back-country.
LAKE TURKANA
The world’s largest desert lake, Turkana or the Jade Sea as its also known, due to its shimmering blue-green water is the most remote yet alluring attraction for intrepid travelers to Kenya. Surrounded by an arid, seemingly extra-terrestrial landscape the lake is home to Sibiloi National Park – a World Heritage site with fossil beds and a petrified forest. Sibiloi hosts the Koobi Fora region, one of the world’s leading paleontological sites, rich in the fossil remains of early hominids as well as many other archeological discoveries. Central and South Islands are also national parks and are important staging posts for migrating birds. There are 60 recorded species of fish in the lake but Turkana’s most famous inhabitants are Nile crocodiles, with the world’s largest remaining population – 12,000 have been estimated to breed on Central Island alone. Lake Turkana takes you back to the cradle of humankind, an ancient, other-worldly land, far removed from the pace of the modern world.
CHALBI DESERT
In Kenya’s far north, west of Marsabit, is the Chalbi Desert, covering an area of 100,000 square kilometers. The name comes from the native Gabra people, meaning “salty and bare”, and is the only area in Kenya that can be considered a true desert. It comprises a stark landscape of rocky lava flows, cracked earth and undulating sand dunes. Remarkably the area attracts a range of wildlife, including oryx, Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich and vulterine guinea fowl – all adapted to these incredibly harsh conditions. Chalbi, formerly a lake, is a natural wonder and demonstrates Kenya’s unparalleled geographical diversity.
